Vagabondage Christmas pressie offer

Having trouble thinking of an unusual and interesting present for someone you know?

vagab-santa-draft

Here’s my gift-giving season offer if anyone is interested…

If you order a copy of Vagabondage as a present for someone within Australia, I can post it straight to them to save you the trouble. And I will sign the book and include a bookmark, plus a Bush Santa photo with a short message of your choice on the back, all for the bookshop price of $24.95.

If you want to order 6 or more copies to give as presents (or for your bookgroup) and if these are all posted to the one address, then you get a 20% discount (ie $20 per copy for six copies or more), and I can also sign them and throw in some bookmarks.

Now if you want it to get to your friend (or to you if it’s a pack of 6 or more) before Christmas day, then you’d better get cracking and get your order in and paid before Monday the 8th December. I can still take orders after that, but can’t really guarantee it will make it in time — altho Australia post is usually pretty snappy at this time of the year, so who knows. (I posted some books last week and they only took a couple of days to arrive interstate, but hard to tell, so get in early if you can.)

So send me a message  via the contact form or Facebook – and include all the necessary details (where to post it to, what short message you want on the Santa pic-card, your email, etc), and I’ll send you paypal and direct deposit info. Once you’ve paid, let me know, and I’ll post it out. Or for single copies you can use this paypal button:

(By the way, the postage offer is only for within Australia. If you want to send it to someone overseas it’s easier if I send it to you and you send it on.)

Meanwhile if you want to read what reviewers and so on have been saying about it – check it out here.  But here’s a couple to whet your interest:

I’d like to nominate Beth Spencer’s Vagabondage as my best read for 2014… I love this book for its thought-provoking portrayal of a mid life crisis writ large. It’s beautiful, funny, sad, and speaks to all who aim to age disgracefully.’ — Suzanne Donisthorpe, Books & Arts Daily

‘This is a work that is very specific and personal and yet opens out in universal, fabulously recognisable and immediate ways. A book to read and re-read, and re-inhabit.‘ — Philippa Hawker, Arts and Film writer for The Age

‘Hilarious and poignant.’— Library and Computing News

So much fun to read. Warm, witty and profound.’ — Claudia Taranto, Radio National.

Bush Santas – a tribute to Australian roadside art

.
Bush Santas

bush santa1-colour

I’ve caught him out several times,
rounding a bend miles from
anywhere and there he is
in the middle of a paddock
hopping a motor bike
speeding off with a full sack.

Or steering a team of corrugated kangaroos
using a cattle ramp as a launching pad.
Always in a hurry.  (Big brown land.
So much to deliver. No pressure. Ha!)

And still wearing    that   ridiculous
fur-trimmed red suit even on days
        hot enough
to melt the soles from your boots.

There he goes —
straddling that post-and-rail fence.

I think of blowflies, ‘santa snow’ on the windows,
the smell of roast chicken and gravy. Plum puddings
with threepenny bits and a sweet milky custard.

And under the tree,
my Christmas Dad
with his big farrier’s hands
passing out presents.

Vagabondage – my new verse memoir out now with UWAP – and launch details

[Vagabondage cover].

About two years ago I was driving to the supermarket when I had the thought ‘Hmm… what if I wrote a little book of poems about my year living in the Van?’

By the time I got home I decided this would be a good writing rehab project. Something to get me back into the joy of writing just for myself again after years spent on a PhD and other projects.

But as I made notes and wrote poems (often blurrily speaking the first draft or idea into my iphone while lying in bed in the wee hours), I began to get quite excited about it as a book as I enjoyed the process of collaging it together as a story and as a number of themes close to my heart started to emerge.

The idea of home, for instance, and belonging (not just who we be, but how we be).

The productive benefits of structure versus the lure of freedom.

And the fine line that often tantalises and shimmers between solitude and loneliness.

So here it is, due out 1st October through UWAPublishing. My first book in 18 years.

Vagabondage traces my journey from when I decided to sell my house and garden in Creswick, a small town in country Victoria, through to buying a van and going on the road, and wanders back and forth through parts of my childhood as the physical journey very rapidly also became an interior one.

I’m currently working out some launch possibilities in Sydney, maybe a small one on the central coast, and hopefully also something down in my home town of Melbourne — maybe even something along the way at my brother’s vineyard – the Shiraz Republic – in central Victoria.

So if you’d like to be kept in the loop and want to join in the fun, drop me a message and I’ll put you on the mailing list. Likewise please let me know if you have any suggestions for readings or events as I am looking forward to hanging up my recluse hat and being more social for a while. And if you’d like a review copy, contact UWAP.

Huge thanks to everyone involved in getting this book out — all at UWAP and especially Terri-ann White. I feel very fortunate that my book found such a good home.

And much love to those who read it in draft and cheered me on as a writer for so many years. With a big special mega-thanks to my Perth based friend and film-writer Ian Wansbrough for his insightful and painstaking feedback on drafts, and hours of stimulating chat on the phone. How lucky am I.

How to get a copy:

You can buy a copy, post free within Australia, at $24.95 direct from me and I’ll sign it for you — just send me an email via the contact form.

It is also available in selected bookshops — the kind that stock a lot of Australian literature (but if your local shop doesn’t have it, you can ask them to order a copy for you).

Or (easiest way) you can get it direct and post-free from UWAP’s website.

Note, book clubs can get a 15% discount on six or more copies –– just use the discount codeBOOKCLUB15 on the checkout at the UWAP website.

Or send me a message and I’ll send you a special invoice for your six or more copies at 15% discount and will throw in some bookmarks.

(And you can also get the 15% discount if you buy six or more for Christmas pressies!)
